Dr. David Crawford invites Dr. Badrinath Konety to provide a counterpoint discussion on novel biomarkers and their use in detecting prostate cancer. Although, Dr. Konety agrees with the value of biomarkers and that they can be used in addition to PSA tests, he is not sure they are ready for prime time.  Dr. Konety proposes key questions on novel biomarkers including their level improvement, are they causing our objectives to conflict with each other and their cost effectiveness.

Bob BruininksIn late 2009, former University of Minnesota President Bob Bruininks received the diagnosis no one wants to hear: cancer. On an intellectual level, he knew that stage-1 prostate cancer is eminently treatable—and in his case, it had been caught early—but that knowledge was cold comfort when faced with additional tests and the uncertainty of what to do next.

When Ron Poole talks about the Institute for Prostate and Urologic Cancer (IPUC), he can’t help but showcase the skills that have made him a successful investment counselor. He’s eager to pitch the center and its mission. But just as he would pick a stock or business venture, he supported the CPC only after careful research.

Sidney Thompson has had only one really bad day since being diagnosed with prostate cancer five years ago. It came in July 2008, when he learned that his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level had risen to the point where he would need chemotherapy.

“That afternoon I was dumpy,” recalls Thompson. “The next morning I made up my mind. I’ve always been a fighter. My parents instilled in us that it’s better to think about how to accomplish something rather than sit around and mope.”
